Vice President Raquel Peña attended the official start of the cargo scanning system at the Haina Port in western Santo Domingo. The Vice President said the new system is part of decisive steps being taken towards the goal of positioning the Dominican Republic as the logistics center par excellence in the region. She said the commissioning of the x-ray equipment reinforces controls, strengthens security and facilitates foreign trade by increasing logistical efficiency with the implementation of modern technology.
The high-tech “RAPISCAN” Eagle P60-S scanner, manufactured in the United States, supports the government’s objective of clearing containers within 24 hours, facilitating and reducing the goods inspection process and the time containers spend at the port. This equipment complies with the guidelines and technical specifications of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
The private operators of the port, Haina International Terminals (HIT) donated the equipment to the Customs Agency. The new system is an investment of around US$3 million in infrastructure and support systems.
During the ceremony, Peña stressed the new system makes the operation of the port more efficient, safer and more competitive in the face of international markets, strengthening the leading position in maritime transport in the region.
