Government again seeks to tax digital services

The Tax Agency (DGII) has plans to tax the local usage of Netflix, Spotify, Amazon and other digital services in the country. Users do not pay the ITBIS tax on these services. The DGII has drafted a ruling and has published it online for consultations through 21 March. A public hearing is called for the discussions.

A tax on the services had been included in the 2021 budget and was rejected. The past Medina administration had also included the tax in the 2020 and later desisted.

Diario Libre publishes a Poteleche caricature that highlights that the new taxes are needed to pay for the high pensions the government is awarding to a select group.
