ProConsumidor: Charging extra for use of credit cards is illegal

The director of the government consumer protection agency (ProConsumidor) says that several businesses in Greater Santo Domingo have been fined for charging extra to consumers for the use of their credit or debit cards.

Consumer Protection Law 358-05 allows for fines that run from five to 50 minimum wages. Art. 87 of the law establishes that the prices of goods cannot be changed depending on payment method. Eddy Alcantara of ProConsumidor says the fines have applied to beauty parlors, restaurants and other businesses that resort to the illegal practice to compensate for the financial charges.

In a press release, Alcantara discouraged businesses from the illegal practice and encouraged consumers to denounce cases where they are affected.
