ITLA courses at the Parque del Este bus terminal

Vice President Raquel Peña announced a branch of the Las Americas Institute of Technology (ITLA) to be located at the site of the Parque del Este bus terminal site in eastern Santo Domingo. The bus terminal site was built by the past Danilo Medina administration under protest by leading institutions in the municipality.

Technology, language, and music courses will be soon available at the new higher learning site. The government announced 200 scholarships will be granted to residents in the eastern Santo Domingo province municipality.

The new facilities are located in the Parada de la Cultura Ramón Oviedo, in front of Los Tres Ojos National Park and adjacent to the Mirador del Este Park.

The university will offer courses and workshops focused on Software Development, Information Networks, Multimedia, Mechatronics, Automated Manufacturing and Computer Security. It also has a Language School and a Music School. The ITLA extension will have a virtual library providing access to 48,000 books related to high technology.

The director of ITLA, Omar Méndez said the new branch has capacity for 1,500 young people a year.

This branch has a space being set up to fit prostheses as part of the ProtoScanner 3D project, which requires prior medical recommendation and authorization and provides a response to the most vulnerable population with motor disabilities. The ITLA creates the prostheses and their coverage is guaranteed through the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa).

The mayor for Santo Domingo East, Manuel Jiménez says that the center will also house a school of arts, a social innovation center, loan offices for ecological projects and a training center for environmental technicians. The director of the Government Office of Information and Communication Technology (OGTIC), Pedro Quezada also announced a Punto Gob, would be installed where 12 government institutions will offer more than 30 express services.
