Manuel Selman wins Cabarete Pro surfing event

Dominican surfer Manuel Selman accomplished his dream and won the title of the Cabarete Pro, the world qualifying surfing competition, that took place 3 to 6 March 2022 at Playa Encuentro, the west side of Cabarete Beach. Selman overcame Evan Geiselman of Florida when he rode four to six-foot swells on the finals day.

Local knowledge of the swells helped Selman clinch the title. As reported, a blustering storm swept through Encuentro Beach for a critical day of competition at the Cabarete Pro powered by Carambola Surf House.

This was the first time the Dominican Republic hosted a Qualifying Series surf event.

A plus during the event was that Baseball Cooperstown Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero was the ambassador and host of the event, the Cabarete Pro.

The surfers came to Puerto Plata’s Cabarete beach destination attracted by the excellent conditions for the sport of wind and waves.

Around 100 professional surfers came for the WSL Qualifying Series (QS). The competitors were from the United States, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and the Dominican Republic host.

The Ministry of Tourism sponsored the sporting event.
