
The Presidential Assets Recovery Team appointed by President Luis Abinader is working to recover some RD$39 billion from those involved in the five major corruption cases currently tackled by the Justice Department. The government is suing for damages to the people of the Dominican Republic. The cases that add up to the RD$39 billion are Coral and Coral 5G, Octopus, Medusa and Operation 13.
In Coral and Coral 5G, high-ranking officers of the Tourism Police and the Presidential Security Detail are involved. No precise sum on the assets claimed has been revealed to the public.
In the Anti-Pulpo (Octopus) case, the sum being sought is over RD$23 billion. This case involves Juan Alexis Medina Sanchez, the brother of former President Danilo Medina.
In the Medusa case, assets illicitly acquired for RD$9 billion are involved. The defendant is the former Attorney General, Jean Alain Rodriguez.
Operation 13 is the case that involves corruption at the National Lottery, and the damages sought are said to be RD$600 million.
