Bonaparte Gautreaux Piñeyro named 2022 National Journalism Award winner

The Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic and the Dominican Guild of Journalists (CDP) named Bonaparte Gautreaux Piñeyro as the 2022 National Journalism Award winner. The award recognizes the career of journalists in the country and their contributions to society. The award comes with a cash prize of RD$1 million.

Gautreaux Piñeyro was chosen unanimously by the jury made up by Education Minister Roberto Fulcar; Aurelio Henriquez, president of the Dominican Guild of Journalists; Persio Maldonado, president of the Dominican Society of Newspapers; Rosa Olga Medrano, executive director of the Dominican Association of Radio Broadcasters; Félix Almonte, director of the Department of Social Communication of the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, and journalists José P. Monegro, director of the newspaper El Día; Miguelina Crespo and Eddy Pereyra, secretary of the award.

Bonaparte Gautreaux Piñeyro was born in La Romana in 1937. He studied law and journalism at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. He served as consul in La Guaira, Venezuela and vice minister of the Presidency under the government head by Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deñó.

He has published essays on the origin of merengue and Dominican narrative. He is the author of “Cuentos del Abuelo Julio”, “La ciudad clandestina y los secretos del General” and a novel, “Al final del arco iris”. His stories, “A partir de esta noche” and “Sonámbulo” received awards from the Movimiento Cultural Dominicano and Casa de Teatro, respectively.

He initiated and directed for many years, the “Cultura” section of El Nacional newspaper.
