Free trade zone exports grow 12% in Q1; record exports in March 2022

The executive director of the National Council of Free Export Zones (CNZFE) Daniel Liranzo says that during the first quarter of the year (Q1), free trade zone exports were up 12% compared to January-March 2021. Exports were US$1.85 billion, or 60.8% of the country’s total exports during the quarter. He noted that for the first time in the history of the free trade zones, exports exceeded US$700 million in one month. Free zones exported a record US$727.9 million in March 2022.

Liranzo says Customs Agency (DGA) statistics indicate that almost all productive sectors operating in the free zones experienced increases in the value of their exports for the first three months of 2022. The sectors reporting growth were jewelry, apparel and textiles, medical products, electrical and electronic products, and tobacco manufacturing.
