The media has focused on how the stabbing would have been a self-defense reflex. Meanwhile, the Police is looking for 30-year old Franyelis María Furcal. The employee of a Chinese immigrant hardware store (Ferreteria Z&C) located in the uptown Duarte Avenue and Nicolas de Ovando area is accused of murdering her supervisor, 34-year old Jhei Leet on Friday, 22 April 2022. A surveillance video shows how the woman murdered the employee after he kicked her. After she stabbed the Chinese, she ran from the store and has yet to be found. She is the mother of three children, 12, 9 and 3.
Other employees, told Diario Libre that the deceased, a nephew of one of the owners, regularly abused the employees.
A report in Diario Libre says the murder by the employee has exacerbated labor relations in businesses managed by Chinese and the general perception in the country of the Asian immigrants. Wing Chiong Ho Wong, liaison for the Chinese community with the Executive Branch, visited Diario Libre and said the murder has generated tension among the Chinese community in the country. He called for an end to expressions of disrespect that he says Chinese bosses have suffered after the murder.
“The Chinese in this country are hardworking,” said Ho Wong. He said Dominicans would effectively describe the Chinese as hardworking and now he has heard these being described as “abusive.”
He said he has been in contact with the owners of the hardware store. These reportedly told him they were not aware of any problems between the deceased and the fugitive employee Franyelis María Fulcar.
