The heavy rains forecast for the capital city on Sunday, 1 May 2022, resulted in a second postponement of the Santo Domingo Carnival. The Mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía approved the rescheduling for Saturday, 7 May starting at 2pm on the Santo Domingo Malecon. The event is organized by the city government with the participation of the Carnival Union of the National District (UCADI).
In the post announcing the postponement, the UCADI representative indicates that “by the will of our Lord Jesus Christ we are going to have to postpone our carnival. It will be a great show as everyone expects. Saturday here at the Malecon at two o’clock in the afternoon”.
It has been a tough year for carnival organizers in the Dominican Republic. The traditional February and March celebrations were reduced to a minimum as the country at the time was recovering from a spike in Covid-19 cases with the entry of the Omicron variant.
