Three men died of serious injuries suffered in the Canal del Sol (Channel 6) fire in Santo Domingo on Tuesday, 19 April 2022. Three other men are hospitalized at the Pearl F. Ort Burn Unit at the Ney Arias Lora Traumatology Hospital.
The deceased are 22-year old cameraman Kelvin Castillo. Others reported dead in the fire are: 77-year old José del Carmen Reyes, and 23 year old Jefrey Isaac Vásquez Holguín.
A spokesman for the Fire Department says the fire occurred due to welding and painting works for ongoing renovations. “This fire was caused by a deflagration (when a substance suddenly burns with flames and without explosion) that was produced by the accumulation of vapors emanating from the product applied to prevent corrosion,” the Fire Department report states.
