The environmental impact study that Empaca prepared at the behest of the Public-Private Alliances Agency and the Pro-Pedernales Trust was shown to the public late last week. The presentation did not comply with the advance notification rules, nevertheless.
As has been reported, there are ongoing efforts to invest well over a billion dollars in the area turning this into the new destination for resort tourism to the Dominican Republic. As reported, one important feature of the study is the emphasis on preserving the land and marine life in all of its forms.
One measure is to modify the requirements of Law 64-00 that protect coastlines. The law prohibits any construction within 60 meters of the median tide mark. The proposals from the study expand this restriction to 140 meters. Given the delicate eco-system of the whole area, this move would certainly positively impact.
The first phase of the project calls for the construction of 4,700 rooms and eventual size of 12,000 rooms for visitors. Take note that the entire population of Pedernales province is around 28,000 people.
