The Kyiv Grand Ballet announces it will present “Giselle” in all the countries where the company is touring. The leading ballet of Ukraine had been touring presenting “Swan Lake”.
A Santo Domingo performance is set for the Carlos Piantini Hall of the National Theater on 2 July 2022 at 8:30pm.
The ballet company was touring France when Russia invaded Ukraine. Since then, many of the dancers decided to continue to tour in Europe and the rest of the world.
The ballet “Giselle” by Adolphe Adam is a mystical romantic drama filled with symbols and hidden meanings. It is an eternal story of love, loyalty, deceived expectations and soul-rending remorse.
In the ballet, the Count Albrecht and the peasant woman Giselle love each other, but Albert has a fiancee; the girl finds out about this and dies of grief, after which she becomes a spirit. Albert comes at night to the grave of his beloved and is surrounded by many spirits of other deceived dead brides. He is threatened with death, but Giselle protects him from the wrath of her friends and he manages to escape. For the mistakes made, the price turns out to be unbearable – repentance absorbs Albert.
The choice of change of ballet is because of the allegory of the classic ballet to the present war situation. Through the entire history of the ballet, the images of the spirits run through. It is betrayal that turns them from ordinary girls into mystical “wilis,” who are ready to avenge themselves. The dancers of the Ukrainian ballet express on the stage all the readiness of Ukrainian people to stand up for themselves, survive in the struggle and defend their ideals, explain the producers.
The performances are part of the Solidarity Tour to support the ballet troupe Kyiv Grand Ballet with the participation of leading artists of the Ukrainian ballet.
In Santo Domingo, the performance is a BigStarSD production.
