Abinader to travel to the Summit of the Americas

President Luis Abinader travels on Tuesday, 7 June 2022 to Los Angeles, California, USA to attend the Summit of the Americas hosted by US President Joe Biden. President Abinader is scheduled to return on Saturday.

The 9th Summit of the Americas starts on 7 June and runs through 10 June 2022. This year’s theme is “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future.”

The formal opening is on Wednesday, 8 June with the participation of US President Joe Biden.

The United States government is hosting the Ninth Summit of the Americas to bring together invited leaders from North, South, and Central American countries, along with the Caribbean, to collaborate on how to advance a wide range of proposals in the Western Hemisphere.

At this year’s summit, the US will host three forums — the Ninth Civil Society Forum, the Sixth Young Americas Forum, and the Fourth CEO Summit of the Americas.

Each forum’s mission is to foster dialogue between political leaders.

The United States organizers say that at this year’s summit, held in Los Angeles the first full week of June, countries will commit to:
Free and fair elections.
Protection of human rights defenders, environmental defenders, journalists, workers, women and girls in all their diversity, and members of vulnerable and marginalized groups.
Open government.
Combating corruption.
Anti-corruption reporting and oversight.

Latin American media reports many perceive the Summit as a “summit of regional allies of the United States.”

The list of heads of government who have confirmed their attendance are the Dominican Republic Haiti, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Those that are not expected to attend are Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, among others.

Regardless of the other discussions, of capital importance to the Dominican Republic is that Acting President of Haiti, Ariel Henry will be attending. Haiti’s situation is expected to be covered during the event. Henry traveled on Friday, 3 June to Los Angeles. As reported in Haiti Libre, Henry said he will discuss with the attendants Haiti’s priorities for security. He has spoken that it is “time for Haitians to assume leadership in the management of the country.”

Henry says he will discuss the reconstruction plan for the southern part of the country, and will address issues of security, democratic governance and economic and social difficulties.

He said that the country seeks assistance to equip the police forces to deal with gangs who, through illegal mechanisms, obtain increasingly dangerous weapons.
