Legislators get juicy bonus for Mother’s Day

Dominican lawmakers received between RD$475,000 to RD$600,000 in bonuses for Mother’s Day, the last Sunday in May, as reported in El Caribe.

The vice-president of the Senate), Santiago Zorrilla (El Seibo-PRM), told El Caribe that each senator received RD$600 thousand in 600 bonds of 1,000 pesos each to be distributed to their constituents at their discretion on occasion of Mother’s Day. The cards would be activated with the identity card of the final beneficiary. The total allocated to the senators for the activity was RD$19.2 million.

Deputy Soraya Suárez, secretary of the Chamber of Deputies and member of the ruling PRM party told El Caribe the deputies received RD$475,000 distributed in three types of bonds: 300 thousand in bonds to buy in stores (of 500 and 1,000 pesos each); 100 bonds, of 1,000 pesos each in “Bono Día de las Madres” cards; and 50 “Bono Navideño” cards (which expire on 30 June), of 1,500 pesos each.

El Caribe said it requested through the Office of Free Access to Information of the two legislative chambers the official information on the amounts received by each legislator for the celebration of Mother’s Day, but had not yet received an answer.

The Chamber of Deputies currently has 189 active legislators, out of the 190 because one is in jail in Miami for drug trafficking matters. At RD$475,000 each, the total allocated to the Chamber of Deputies would have been RD$89,775,000.
