Two busy streets in the inner part of the National District, Benito Gonzalez and Mella are now running in different directions.
For those that do not immediately recognize these streets, here is where they are. Benito Gonzalez is the next street south of 27 of February Avenue. It runs past the “Huacal” or the Juan Pablo Duarte Government Offices and the National Police headquarters and goes through the middle of Chinatown, all the way to the entrance of the Duarte Bridge over the Ozama River.
Av. Mella starts just behind the Palo Hincado Street fire station across from Independence Park and runs sort of northeast until it joins the entry to the bridge of the same name. It goes past the Mercado Modelo, skirts the lower part of Chinatown and the northern part of the Colonial City.
The change is to ease traffic congestion in and around the tourist areas of the Colonial City.
Benito Gonzalez will now run West-to East, and Mella will run East to West, ending on 30 de Marzo. New traffic signage is now in place.
