A failed migration attempt has turned into a Texas tragedy. As the news of the horrific discovery of over 50 persons dead from heat and de-hydration in a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas began to appear in local newspapers, many families were prepared for the worst. At least the bodies of four persons from the Dominican Republic have been identified so far.
US government officials said that at least 53 of the 64 people inside, men, women and some children died from the extreme heat inside the truck. Several survived and were treated in local hospitals. Federal officials said this is the most deadly migrant smuggling case in US history.
Not so long ago, there were many Dominicans among the 160 persons packed inside the trailer that crashed in Chiapas, Mexico and 55 persons died, among them 16 Dominicans, and most of these were from the town of Bani. So far, nearly 500 persons have died trying to get into the United States across the southern border.
Just last week, over 50 Dominicans and a few Haitians were picked out of a home-build open boat off the coast of Puerto Rico.
