The Dominican Republic received the Pro Tempore Presidency (PPT) of the Central American Integration System (SICA) on 1 July 2022 and commits to continue advancing in the strengthening of the regional guidelines established in this organization.
This is the third time that the Dominican Republic assumes the position for the six month term. Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez said the country identifies with the slogan of the term: “Adapting regional integration to the new challenges.” Alvarez spoke of renewed efforts to strengthen the regional dialogue mechanism and draft an agenda to address the common problems faced by the member states in Central America and the Caribbean.
Alvarez said that the Dominican Republic is committed to draw strategic lines that will contribute to the economic, social and especially institutional strengthening of the region, working together to overcome the difficulties.
During this period, the Dominican Republic will be in charge of coordinating sectoral meetings to address issues such as democratic security, climate change, comprehensive risk management, social and economic integration and institutional strengthening. The draft will then be submitted to the LVI Summit of Heads of State and Government of SICA to be held in the Dominican Republic in December 2022 before passing the PPT to Belize.
SICA is the Central American Regional Integration institutional framework. Its main objective is to achieve the integration of Central America as a region of peace, freedom, democracy and development. The members are Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Belize and the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic joined SICA, allying with the Central American bloc of countries after leaders in the English-speaking Caribbean Community (Caricom) rejected the full inclusion of the Dominican Republic in that regional bloc.
Recently, the Dominican Republic diplomacy has been active with the organization of the pro-democracy movement, Alliance for Development in Democracy, that has integrated Panama, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Ecuador.
