Muckraking journalist Marino Zapete explained during an interview for the Esta Noche con Mariasela TV program on Channel 9 that the judiciary is moving on the denounced case of RD$1 billion in asphalt irregularly signed by former Minister of Public Works Gonzalo Castillo during the Danilo Medina administration. Castillo would go on to become the then ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate in the 2020 presidential election.
Zapete explained the purchase will be investigated as it is part of the countersuit for defamation brought against Maybeth Rodríguez Sánchez. Lawyers representing Maybeth Rodriguez Sanchez, sister of at the time Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez Sanchez, had sued Zapete for defamation after Zapete made the revelations on his El Jarabe TV program. Zapete said after the change of government, he countersued and the case is to be heard in trial, when the involved will have to respond to the charges. Zapete, nevertheless, said that Jean Alain Rodríguez Sanchez is but a “pawn.”
Zapete explained that the defamation case brought against him was because the former chief prosecutor could not demonstrate the legitimacy of the RD$1 billion in asphalt contracting signed by his sister, Maybeth Rodríguez Sánchez in the name of a Dominican company. He said the co-owner of the company is an offshore company.
On the TV program Zapete spoke of the tribulations and harassment he suffered after millions were spent on hiring high tech and a team of experts to combat the revelations of influential journalists in the Dominican Republic, including Zapete. The Medusa file that is circulating now in the media indicates that the Attorney General Office paid millions in propaganda to diminish the role of the “detracting” journalists.
