ONE releases stats on homicides; they differ from those of the Ministry of Interior & Police

Minister of Interior & Police Jesus (Chu) Vasquez has not commented on the difference in stats revealed by the National Statistics Office (ONE) and the Ministry of Interior & Police on crime. The ONE Annual Yearbook published data indicating 177 more homicides than the number the Ministry is reporting, Diario Libre revealed on Thursday, 18 August 2022. Diario Libre has published data from the National Office of Statistics 2021 Report that indicates there were 1,349 homicides in 2021.

In April 2022, during an event to evidence successes of the new anti-crime efforts of the Abinader administration, the Ministry of Interior and Police had announced 1,172 homicides in 2021. During the same event, the Ministry of Interior said that 77% of the homicides were motivated by fights and quarrels.

The ONE filed the data on homicides as part of the Statistical Yearbook in the chapter on accidental and violent deaths based on data provided by the National Police and other institutions.
