Cops to patrol large areas with drones; new app announced

The National Police is promoting two new services that seek to modernize the force and combat crime. These are the use of drones and an app for reporting crime.

The Dominican National Police has in operation 18 modern drones to be used to gather intelligence, protect agents from ambushes, and locate people. The drones are assigned to the new Unidad Táctica de Drones of the National Police.

The drones have a range of about five kilometers and can reach an altitude of well over 5,000 feet. These units have been placed with SWAT units, the Center for Criminal Investigations, and the Santiago Regional Command. They transmit images in 4G.

The National Police says that it has in service over 300 security cameras and around 200 police are using body cameras to avoid corrupt practices by the Police on duty.

President Luis Abinader was at the headquarters of the National Police to announce the drones and the new app (Android phones only) to assist citizens in contacting the Police.

In making the presentation, director general of the Police Major General Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte explained the app seeks to achieve a rapprochement with the communities, so that they can report crimes, in real time.

He said that ¨Tu PoliciApp RD¨ is a new channel for citizens to directly contact the Police.

Also online now is a web-based online service that enables those making complaints to follow up on the situation and on how the Police is handling it.
