Court grants domiciliary arrests to accused in major government corruption case

A court authorized that the remaining relatives of former President Danilo Medina in jail and associates accused of a major corruption network against the state be released from Najayo. The case was named Anti-Octopus Operation (Anti-Pulpo) and is still in its preliminary stages with the next pre-trial hearing set for 10 October 2022.

Judge Delby Timoteo Peguero of the Seventh Court of Instruction of the National District ordered that Juan Alexis Medina Sanchez (brother of former President Danilo Medina), Fernando Aquilino Rosa Rosa (nephew of Danilo Medina) and Jose Dolores Santana Carmona be allowed to post bail, domiciliary arrest and the wearing of electronic shackles. Businessman Alexis Medina has been in jail since December 2020. He was allowed to post bail for RD$60 million.

Fernando Rosa, former director of the Fonper government agency, was allowed to post bail for RD$30 million. Jose Dolores Santana Carmona was allowed to post bail for RD$20 million. Santana Carmona is accused of being a front man for Juan Alexis Medina Sanchez.

The investigation file has been shared with the media and the accusations have been widely aired in the media.

Others accused in the Anti-Pulpo case are:
Rafael Germosén (former controller), Carmen Medina Sanchez (sister of former President Danilo Medina and former vice president of Fonper), Freddy Hidalgo, former Minister of Public Health, Aquiles Christopher (inspector of the OISOE), Julian Esteban Suriel (businessman), Domingo Santiago (businessman), Wacal Vernavel (businessman), Francisco Pagan (former director of OISOE).

While the case made numerous headline stories and follow up in the media, the actual case is moving very slowly in the judiciary. Diario Libre reports the seven starts have been postponed. Now the accused can await the developments from the comforts of home.
