Businesses urged to plan for disasters

The spokesperson for the Central American Network for Social Responsibility (Integrarse), Mariel Bera urged companies to better prepare themselves for disasters. Together with reviewing the risk management policies for business models, the organization urged businesses to go beyond the normal areas of risk management in their business model and look seriously at issues such as severe drought, floods, forest fires, hurricanes and other natural phenomena. The speaker noted that such foresight would significantly enhance the ability to reduce the consequences of severe events.

Bera told her audience that for every dollar spent on prevention and or reduction of risks as much as US$15 can be saved from the more expensive subsequent disaster recovery actions. She noted that a dollar spent on the creation of resistant infrastructures can result in a savings of four dollars in reconstruction after a disaster.
