The Instituto de Reproducción y Ginecología del Cibao (IREGCI) announced on Monday, 5 September 2022 the birth of the first baby born alive in the Dominican Republic through the techniques of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and PGD (Preimplantational Genetic Diagnosis). The baby was born at the IREGCI clinic in Santiago city. Santiago is making a name for itself as a destination to consider for medical tourism.
The baby was born on 7 June 2022 in excellent conditions to a Dominican mother and a foreign father who had had multiple problems conceiving.
Reproductive biologist, Dr. Ramon A. Espinal Diloné, the embryologists Lic. Mercedes Ramírez and Dr. Ana Marizán and the international consultant Yadira Díaz were part of the medical team of the IREGCI team that on Monday announced the successful birth.
PGD is a test that analyzes embryos’ genetic and/or chromosomal status before their implantation in the uterus. The main objective is to identify healthy embryos (euploid) in a cohort of embryos of the couple at risk of transmitting any genetic or chromosomal alteration to their offspring.
The test is intended to prevent chromosomally abnormal births. It also aims to reduce the risk of miscarriage and increase success rates in assisted reproduction techniques (ART). It also reduces the time it takes to deliver a healthy child.
A cycle of in vitro fertilization (IVF) is needed to perform a PGD. The oocytes are fertilized by intracytoplasmic microinjection of sperm (ICSI), the embryos are cultured and a biopsy of embryonic cells or trophectoderm (TE) is performed.
