Dominican government and private sector explore alternatives to natural gas supply difficulties

The Dominican Electricity Industry Association (ADIE) is concerned that the Russia vs Ukraine war could further affect the sourcing of natural gas in the Dominican Republic.

ADIE says it is in talks with the Dominican government authorities as the country monitors the present international energy situation and explore possible alternaties to mitigate negative impacts.

According to ADIE, this geopolitical situation has affected the supply of natural gas for electricity generation worldwide more than would have been expected, and the country is no stranger to this reality. The Dominican government seeks to identify options to ensure the supply of natural gas or alternate fuels.

Manuel Cabral, executive vice president of ADIE, says that the country’s diversified generation matrix works in its favor. He said this provides flexibility to replace conventional generation sources and continue operating power plants. He explained that as of July 2022, the primary fuel sources for the National Interconnnected Electric System were: natural gas 40%, coal 30%, oil derivatives 14%, water 6%, wind 6% and solar 3% and biomass 1%.
