The director of the National Statistics Office (ONE), Miosotis Rivas Peña says that the National Census calls for the collecting of data on all people who habitually reside in the country, regardless of whether they are legal or illegal migrants.
The 10th National Population and Housing Census 2022 will be held from 10 to 23 November 2022. It had been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Rivas Peña explains that even when the census is not held to collect information on the migrant population, the effort will produce important information on this sector. Those polled will be asked to answer where they were born, for instance.
Rivas Peña says this will enable the country to update migration information. She said the data on the migrant and Haitian population living in the country is that of the National Survey of Immigrants 2017. This survey established the Haitian migrant population at around 800,400. Peña said the ONE is preparing to conduct a new immigrants survey for 2023.
The ONE has a budget of RD$3.76 billion for the census. 35,000 pollsters will use electronic devices to enter the responses. Some 50,000 are being trained to collect the information during census days from 8am to 5pm.
The preliminary results of the census will be available in the first quarter of 2023.
