The Ministry of Education was defrauded of RD$126 million, as reported in Diario Libre. The Ministry has only received 15,000 school desks of 187,000 contracted under former Minister of Education Roberto Furcal. Furcal was removed after two years of the media publishing a long list of irregularities in tenders. He was never tried in the judiciary for the irregularities. On the contrary, he was named minister for strategic affairs at the Presidency.
New Education Minister Angel Hernandez warns that anyone who has a contract with the Ministry of Education and has not complied will have to face justice.
The Ministry of Education has launched an emergency bid to purchase 35,000 desks in time for the school year starting 19 September 2022 at public schools nationwide. Most private schools reopened in August or early September.
