
The Dominican Republic’s very powerful volleyball team, nicknamed the Queens of the Caribbean, won its first match at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship taking place in the Netherlands and Poland.
In the DR senior women volleyball team’s first match, the team defeated Korea 25-19, 25-12, and 25-15, playing in Arnhem, Netherlands. Spikers Gaila Gonzalez and Yonkaira Peña both hit double figures, and Geraldine Gonzalez was a literal wall on the defense. The Dominican gals out blocked Korea 13-4, and this was a key factor in the victory.
24 teams are participating in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship from 23 September to 15 October 2022. The teams are divided in four pools of six teams each. The DR is playing in Pool B against Korea, Turkey, Poland, Thailand and Croatia.
On Tuesday, the Dominican team will next be in Gdansk, Poland to match Croatia.
