Román Jáquez urges amendments be made to electoral laws

Guest speaker at an event organized by Unapec, Román Jáquez, president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) urged Congress to pass the long-delayed reforms to the electoral system in time for these to be implemented in the May 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the Apec University, Jáquez Liranzo urged Congress act on the proposed amendments to Laws 33-18 of Political Parties, Groupings and Movements and the Electoral Regime Law 15-19. The amendments have been extensively debated but do not seem to be a priority in the Dominican Congress.

“We are aware that electoral reforms are political decisions, but the leadership that decides them must understand and give priority to democracy and the development of its electoral system,” he stated. He added: “The reform that is needed should not be one of the patches; it must be comprehensive, clear and fair with controls that strengthens our electoral system and democracy,” said Jaquez Liranzo.

He said the reforms are of capital importance to design an electoral system for the JCE to carry out elections according to the international best practices.
