The media has been covering how students in several public schools are studying while sitting on the floor now that there are not enough desks to go around. The lack of desks came after major irregularities in a desk tender carried out by former Education Minister Roberto Furcal.
President Luis Abinader finally changed Education Minister Roberto Furcal after two years of the media urging his removal for irregularities in contracting, major irregularities in teacher hiring, and an administration marked by wasteful spending. Furcal is best known for keeping children out of schools until finally Vice President Raquel Peña reverted the minister’s decision to not open public schools until positivity rates were under 5%.
Now, new Education Minister Angel Hernandez has his hands full with inherited problems. N Digital publishes photos of the children studying on the floor. The media has covered how suppliers were paid for the desks, but have not been delivered in time. Several companies have returned money from cash advances received from the Ministry of Education after the new authorities began legal processes against them.
N Digital reported that the Ministry of Education under Angel Hernandez has placed an urgent order for 35,000 desks, but there is a deficit of 152,000 more for which a regular tender will be carried out.
Diario Libre dedicated three editorials today and front page story to the efforts of new Education Minister Angel Hernandez to sort out the Ministry of Education after the legacy of Furcal. The newspaper highlights that Hernandez faces strong opposition from within the ruling political party, as evidenced by the recent actions of party deputies.
