Cabrera boat trip tragedy

Four survivors of a shipwrecked small boat say that more would have survived if the rescue crews from the Armada had reached them earlier. The illegal boat trippers were on their way to Puerto Rico but most did not survive the adverse weather conditions at sea.

Despite reports of distress sent to the Armada, delays in action-taking are said to have resulted in the death of around 20 that were on their way to Puerto Rico on a makeshift boat. Marlon Arias, municipal mayor of Cabrera, said that fishermen from the area were the first to go to the rescue and saved several. As reported, the boat split in two on a breaking wave on the Atlantic Ocean.

As of media reports on 3 October, four persons were rescued – 28-year old Luis Alfredo Gonzalez, 45-year old Adonis Bonilla, 44-year old German Ortiz and 24-year old Luis Angel Alvarado, and the corpse of identified 45-year old Narciso Almanzar.
