
For the second consecutive year, the Dominican government will budget over a trillion pesos for its fiscal year.
Diario Libre reports.The 2022 budget is over the trillion mark, and now this RD$1,247,578,100,000 budget is set for 2023. The details of the budget will be slowly released in different newspaper articles over the coming weeks.
According to the first reports, the budget represents over 15% of the national GDP. In very general terms, the initial commentaries report that the budget will concentrate on strengthening production, lessening the impact of rising prices on consumers, and meeting social demands.
RD$19 billion plus is allocated for the Santiago monorail and cable car system, and the RD$11 billion plus for the work on the Metro system in Los Alcarrizos. The “wall” along the border with Haiti is also mentioned with a generous budget, as are the plans for the improvement of the Port of Manzanillo, the dam at Monte Grande and huge public housing projects.
Social programs such as the Solidarity card, now called “Superate” and the cards for gas, electricity and the family are being allocated RD$43 billion, and the list goes on. In particular, the Attorney General’s Office will get a huge increase in it budget, going from RD$629 million to RD$9 billion in 2023! And of course, there is a deficit, and this year it is 3% of GDP that is slightly less than the 3.6% deficit in 2022.
