Attorney General Miriam German and her team held a press conference on Wednesday, 12 October 2022 to explain the nationwide assessment of public prosecutors that is happening now. The lead officers of Public Prosecutor Offices in key municipalities can opt for a second four year term, but have to pass an assessment. Those that pass the assessment can continue.
Attorney General German Brito said that directing a prosecutor’s office requires more than ordinary skills. She said the person needs to be a good manager of people and funds.
German Brito said this is the first time that the Public Prosecutor’s Office has carried out a technical and transparent process of evaluation of the performance of those who hold positions in the regional and specialized prosecutor’s offices.
The process began in September 2022 and will end in 2023. The four and eight year terms of many prosecutors expired on 31 August 2022.
The assessment is critical after findings of evidence of corruption in the actions of prosecutors named in an irregular procedure under former Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez. Rodríguez is in custody awaiting trial (Medusa Case).
