The highly reputed director of the National Archives, historian Roberto Cassa calls for the Dominican government to resist international pressures and put an end to the years-long laissez-faire attitude in the case of uncontrolled Haitian migration. Cassa was interviewed by Gregory Caimares of La Hora 22 of TeleRadio America and expressed his concern for the situation that the unstopped flow of thousands of Haitians to the country is creating in the medium and long term.
While there are regular checkpoints for vehicular traffic, most of the border between the two countries is unpatrolled. Likewise, there are no controls on market days when the gates are opened for people from Haiti to travel to the Dominican Republic to purchase foods and goods. There are no controls on who returns to Haiti on market days.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez continues to insist at the United Nations forum that the international community take steps to restore minimum levels of security in Haiti.
Recent reports indicate there are around 5 million destitute Haitians living in Haiti. There is no relatively accurate count of how many Haitians have already relocated to the Dominican Republic. Haitians are every day demanding more free public services in the Dominican Republic. Thousands of Haitians study in Dominican schools and thousands give birth for free in public hospitals.
