
President Luis Abinader led the opening of the 9th Dominican History Book Fair, whose central theme this 2022 is “Local History of Towns and Communities” on 24 October 2022.
This fair is held at the premises of the National General Archives at Calle General Modesto Díaz #2 Zona Universitaria, Santo Domingo (Tel (809) 362-1111).
The fair is held as a way to motivate Dominicans to read history. Books, exhibitions, conferences, workshops, panels, documentaries and feature films are part of the event.
Culture Minister Milagros German said at the opening that the National General Archives represents the foundations on which to continue transforming the country.
“From the government we are working for change, for the youth that is here and for the youth that is coming,” she said. She said the fair this year is a space for the history chroniclers to tell the stories of their provinces.
The director of the National General Archives, Roberto Cassá, thanked President Luis Abinader for his support.
“The significance of this Dominican History Book Fair goes with the confidence that it will be a new contribution to a better knowledge of history and a greater stimulus to young people to learn about our reality,” he also said in his opening remarks.
During the inaugural ceremony, several authors were honored for excelling in historical research on their communities: Alfredo Hernández, Carlos Julio Féliz, Edwin Espinal, Emelda Ramos, Fermín Álvarez Santana, Juan Ventura, Luis Efraím Baldrich, Marcos Soto Tejada, Oscar López Reyes, Werner Darío Féliz, Rafael Darío Herrera and Major General (r) Rafael Leónidas Pérez y Pérez.
The fair began on Monday, 24 October 2022 and will be open through Friday, 28 October. The schedule is from 9am to 7pm. The book fair is free of charge and open to the general public.
Several publications being launched during the book far are the result of research sponsored by the National General Archives.
Also present for the opening were Presidency Minister Joel Santos; Higher Education Minister Franklin García Fermín; the president of the Board of Trustees of the National General Archives, Eduardo García Michel, among other officials, historians and special guests.
