Mis Quinientos Locos: a benefit for an excellent cause

The Patronato de la Salud Mental Padre Billini is inviting to see the film “Mis 500 Locos,” the film version of the book by psychiatrist Antonio Zaglul on Tuesday, 15 November 22. The showing will be at the Caribbean Cinemas Downtown Center at Av. Rómulo Betancour and Núñez de Cáceres, 7pm. Contributions are RD$1,500.

The film by director and producer Leticia Tonos on the “Mis Quinientos Locos” book by psychiatrist Antonio Zaglul is again getting high praise in reviews. The film opened in 2020, but given that it was the peak year of the pandemic, most people did not have the opportunity to see it at cinemas.

The movie tells the story of when Dr. Antonio Zaglul was appointed to the Psychiatrist Hospital of Nigua in 1953 after a group of patients escaped. The Trujillo dictatorship government sought to silence criticism of the incident. The film takes viewers on a journey where it will be difficult to distinguish whether madness was inside or outside the mental health institution’s walls.

The film occasionally shows at Dominican cinemas, especially in film festivals. Lantigua understands it is one of the best Dominican films ever made.
