The heavy rains falling over the past few days in the National District affected the arch of the 16th century Gate of Mercy, a historic monument in Santo Domingo. Social network users shared evidence of the damages to the central arch of the Puerta de la Misericordia in Ciudad Nueva. No one was injured. The comments focused on the need for maintenance works and the risk the vulnerable stone structure represents to those who pass under its structure. People also commented on social media that there is neglect to the Puerta de la Misericordia area in general, including a lack of lighting and patrolling in the evening.
The Mercy Gate is in history books as the location where Matías Ramón Mella – one of the original members of La Trinitaria – fired the first shot in revolt against the Haitians at the time of the independence war. His act of bravery made him one of the three founders of the Dominican Republic.
