Ministry of Public Health says there has only been one case of cholera here

The Minister of Public Health Daniel Rivera says there are no new cases of cholera in the country. The Ministry had reported a single case of cholera in the Bavaro area of a woman who had recently returned from Haiti.

Dr. Rivera said that the epidemiological watch is on enhanced alert in the border areas for timely detection of any possible case. He said that hospital staff regularly check patients with diarrheic symptoms for cholera, amoeba, shigella or other parasitic diseases.

“We continue to carry out active surveillance against cholera,” says Dr. Rivera. He explained he personally has been in close contact with the provincial health authorities in the four border areas — Pedernales, Elías Piñas, Jimaní and Dajabón. “We want to make sure that no new cases have crossed, but so far we only have the case of the Higüey municipality (Bavaro). The diarrheic cases in Dajabón were of amoeba,” said Rivera.

As for dengue, Rivera said that this disease is also being managed. He says that dengue, like cholera, when treated in time, are not fatal. He urged the population to see a doctor when there is fever or diarrheal symptoms to rule out more serious diseases and treat the case in time.
