DR is active in International Counter Ransomware Initiative

The Dominican Republic is one of the signatories of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI). The initiative seeks to counterattack malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. Other members are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, and Ukraine, and the European Union.

The members met in Washington, DC from 31 October to 1 November 2022 and issued a joint statement at the end of the Second CRI Summit. The members reaffirmed their commitment to build collective resilience to ransomware, cooperate to disrupt ransomware and pursue the actors responsible, countering illicit finance that underpins the ransomware ecosystem, working with the private sector to defend against ransomware attacks, and continuing to cooperate internationally across all elements of the ransomware threat.

Ransomware is a malware designed to deny a user or organization access to files on their computer. By encrypting these files and demanding a ransom payment for the decryption key, cyberattackers place organizations in a position where paying the ransom is the easiest and cheapest way to regain access to their files.
