The director of the Eduardo Brito National Theater Carlos Veitia announced that jeans, clean tennis shoes and even T-shirts with sleeves are acceptable attire, except during gala shows. For the gala shows, formal evening attire is required, as reported in Acento. “An artistic venue is in many ways sacred, however, the public must have access to it and feel part of it,” reads the document announcing the new dress code.
Veitia said that persons wearing torn or ripped jeans, t-shirts or sleeveless shirts, shorts or Bermuda shorts, caps, flip-flops, sandals and transparent clothing that reveal private parts will still be denied entrance to the theater.
He justified the change on grounds that people attend the theater after a normal workday. “In the hustle and bustle of today’s life, a visit to the theater comes, more often than not, at the end of the workday, which sometimes becomes a constraint on wardrobe, so we allow for a somewhat flexible form of dress. However, users of the National Theater should not take things to the extreme: a gentleman in shorts may not enter the hall and ladies should maintain a decent style of dress, bearing in mind that they may well be seated next to people in full evening dress,” the statement said.
Veitia did say that punctuality is a must when attending the theater. Those who are late could lose their right to admission.
