There is a motor vehicle for every two Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. That explains the mega traffic jams Dominicans must endure, mainly in the cities. The Tax Agency reports that 5.2 million vehicles are in circulation. These need now to renovate their circulation permits.
Ariel Medina Lockward, director of the Motor Vehicles Department of the Tax Agency, told Noticias SIN that 50% of these vehicles are concentrated in Greater Santo Domingo – the National District and Santo Domingo province. In the central Cibao region registries show 30% of the vehicles are locted, while in the booming touristic region of the East, there is another 10%.
Noticias SIN reports that statistics indicate that the number of vehicles in circulation has doubled in the past 15 years. During those years, the government has sponsored vehicle vending fairs with low interest on vehicles.
Medina Lockward said in the list there are numerous vehicles that are nothing but scrap metal because everything that is not removed remains in the national registry of motor vehicles.
He said that 55% of the vehicles are motorcycles.
