Ministry of Public Health receives a shipment of Yellow Fever vaccines

The Ministry of Public Health announces it has received a shipment of 10,000 yellow fever vaccine doses. The Ministry will soon open a second vaccination post at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City in the National District. There is a vaccination center at the Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud, Building #5. The vaccines are also available at the La Galván Health Center in the National District. And at the José María Cabral y Báez Public Hospital in Santiago.

The Pan American Health Organization PAHO/WHO supplies the vaccines. The Dominican government purchases the vaccines using resources through the Revolving Fund of the Pan American Health Organization PAHO/WHO.

Dr. Edison Féliz, director of the Regional Metropolitan Health Service of the Ministry of Public Health, announces that “in the next few days” a new vaccination post for Yellow Fever will be opened at the Luis Eduardo Aybar Health City in the National District. He said that the measure is taken to reduce the crowds at the La Galván Health Center.

The Ministry of Public Health says that so far this year, including the recent 10,000 shipment, 18,000 doses are available.

While there is no Yellow Fever in the Dominican Republic, around 150 to 200 people are immunized daily. The vaccines are applied in compliance with International Health Regulations to travelers going to countries where the disease is endemic.

Hundreds of foreigners seek the vaccine that is applied free of charge. Most need the vaccine to travel abroad to South American and Central American countries — Argentina, Brazil, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Brazil and Venezuela, Costa Rica. The Ministry of Public Health says that the countries to where people requesting the vaccine travel the most are El Salvador, Nicaragua, Brazil and Venezuela.

Yellow Fever is an infectious disease of viral origin transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. It gets its name because in the second phase of the disease, the affected person’s skin turns yellow due to jaundice.
