
The National Police arrested on Tuesday, 13 December 2022 a man suspect of throwing a large rock down from a pedestrian crossway. The rock smashed the front window of a vehicle crossing below and killed its driver, 29-year old engineer Joel Rafael Cabrera Espino. Cabrera Espino drove his vehicle under a pedestrian crossway of the 27 de Febrero Avenue around 4am on Sunday, 11 December. The engineer was on his way home after partying with friends.
The Police suspects 60-year old Newton Perez Feliz, a reportedly deranged and homeless man, committed the crime. Perez Feliz was arrested in the vicinity of 27 de Febrero Avenue and Dr. Delgado street in Don Bosco sector of the National District.
Before making the arrest, the Police scanned several surveillance cameras in the area to be able to identify the suspect. Then an arrest order was issued by a competent court for the arrest.
The Police say the detainee will be brought to justice, via the Public Prosecutors Office.
Cabrera’s corpse was found by his work colleagues after relatives sought help when he did not come home.
The co-workers tracked their friend down by following the route the now deceased would have taken to get home. They arrive when a unit of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) was about to send the body to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences for autopsy.
The now deceased driver was able to stop the vehicle around 100 meters from the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center after receiving the fatal blow.
Senator Yvan Lorenzo, who is the spokesperson for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), called for the Ministry of Public Health to remove deranged persons and the homeless from city streets.
