
The Chamber of Deputies passed the aviation agreement signed on 2 November 2018 with the People’s Republic of China and on 12 November 2018 with Uruguay. The agreements had already passed in the Senate. The agreements now return to the Executive Branch for enactment.
As reported in Listin Diario, the purpose of the China-DR agreement is to establish civil air transport services between both countries, recognizing the importance of air transport as a means of creating and fostering friendship, understanding and cooperation between both peoples, facilitating the expansion of international air transport opportunities.
The air services agreement with the South American country approves the rights to overfly the territory of the other party, make stopovers for non-commercial purposes, provide scheduled and non-scheduled services and other aspects.
The Dominican Civil Aviation Board (JAC) says that the aviation agreements are a continuing of the Air Policy of the Dominican Republic established in August 2010. At the time, the JAC was ordered to sign new air services agreements with other nations. The Abinader administration has continued this policy.
The JAC says that negotiations are ongoing with more than 20 countries, among them the United States, Canada, Brazil, Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, Latvia, Poland, Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Seychelles.
