Mixed verdict: 20 years for drug trafficking; judge rejects asset laundering charges

The Collegiate Court of the Judicial District of La Romana declared Jesus Pascual Cabrera Ruiz not guilty of money laundering on Thursday, 22 December 2022. The judge said there was insufficient evidence and acquitted the man who previously had been sentenced on 15 December 2022 to 20 years in jail for criminal association, and complicity in the attempted murder of Lalane Antonio Camacho Astacio and Winston Risik Rodriguez.

The sentence orders all legal oppositions to property in the name of Cabrera Ruiz to be revoked and the property returned to Cabrera Ruiz.

In 2021, the judges of the Second Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of the National District ordered the release of Jesus Pascual Cabrera Ruiz, accused of directing a hitman network from prison for a drug trafficking case.

Cabrera Ruiz was extradited to the country from Spain in 2017, where he had taken refuge for two years. He has been in jail for more than five years.
