Surgeon Ruben Peralta Rosario wins Oscar de la Renta Dominican Emigrant Award

The Ministry of Foreign Relations announced awarding the fourth edition of the Oscar de la Renta Dominican Emigrant Award to Qatar-based surgeon Ruben Peralta Rosario. Vice President Raquel Peña, on behalf of President Luis Abinader, presented the award on Thursday, 22 December 2022, during a ceremony held at the Carlos Piantini Hall of the National Theater in Santo Domingo.

The award seeks to distinguish outstanding Dominicans abroad. It comes with a cash prize of RD$1 million, presented by the general manager of the government Banreservas bank, Samuel Pereyra at the ceremony.

Speaking at the event, Vice President Peña said the Dominican government seeks to pay tribute to the many Dominicans who live abroad and make academic, social, scientific or professional efforts that have positively impacted in their countries of residence.

Dr. Peralta won the award for his philanthropic work for Dominicans abroad, those from vulnerable communities in the United States and other countries worldwide.

Dr. Peralta is a professor of surgery, anesthesia, critical care medicine, emergency medicine and global health. He is a professor and director of the Trauma, Emergency and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program at Hamad General Hospital Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar.

He has authored or co-authored more than 300 scientific papers addressing a broad range of topics on surgery.

As an academic surgeon, Dr. Peralta has been awarded more than US$2 million in competitive research grants in Qatar alone. As an educator, he has led the Trauma, Emergency and Critical Fellowship Program, an advanced medical education and training program of more than 52 physicians in trauma surgery, emergency and critical care medicine in the Middle East region.

He was inducted into the inaugural class of the prestigious Academy of Master Surgeon Educators of the American College of Surgeons for his outstanding contributions and internationally recognized leadership in the innovation and advancement of the Surgical Science and Education.

He is also recipient of the Harald Tscherne Teaching Award 2021, awarded by the European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery (ESTES), University of Zurich, Switzerland.

In 2022, he was honored by the Dominican Embassy in Qatar for his exemplary work and charitable services to the Dominican diaspora, the Dominican Republic and the people of Qatar.

Dr. Peralta is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Critical Care Medicine and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Peralta is a graduate of UNPHU School of Medicine in Santo Domingo, where he graduated Cum Laude. He completed his internship and surgical training at North Oakland Medical Center/ Wayne State University in Michigan, and then moved to Boston where he graduated from Harvard University’s Advanced Surgical and Surgical Trauma and Intensive Care Surgery program.

Throughout his career, Dr. Peralta Rosario has participated in prevention and medical care operations. He presides over the “Fundación Casa Rubén” a non-profit organization that provides services to the needy, with a scholarship program for Dominican students of limited resources in collaboration with the Mohammed Saleh Ghorab Global Education Fund.

During the event, other Dominicans expats that were recognized were:
Ángela Gómez Mota, graduate in Psychology; Farah Mayte Saucedo Cabrera, president of the Twins Foundation; Gustavo José Silva García, doctor in medicine and surgery with a specialty in children’s gastroenterology at the University of Seville; Juan Carlos Angustia García, publicist and graphic designer.

Also Kenia Esther Santana Tejeda, with a doctorate in dentistry and specialty in dental trauma; Máximo Bienvenido Lamarche Cruz, physician, professor and educator at LSU, Charity Hospital School of Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; physician Dr. Miguel Angel Villalona Calero; Scarlin Hernández, computer science specialist; and Ydanis Rodríguez, who is currently commissioner of the Department of Transportation in the city of New York.

The ten finalists were chosen by the Permanent Commission and Jury of the award, presided by José Luís (Pepín) Corripio, president of Grupo Corripio. Other jury members were Carlos de la Mota, vice minister for Dominican Communities Abroad; María Alejandra Castillo, director of Specialized Diplomacy; Haydée Rainieri, senior vice president of Grupo Puntacana; and Eliza Bolen, executive vice president of Oscar de la Renta.
