Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez once again urged the United Nations Security Council to step up its involvement in Haiti and send a combat force as requested by the Haitian government.
The Haitian government is requesting a multi-national security force to restore order and calm in the battered republic. One of the objectives of the force is to end the control several gangs have over the country. Next on the list are the critical social and health issues such as food and the cholera outbreak. The UN never took responsibility for introducing cholera into Haiti by former Minustah forces.
Alvarez noted heavy burden the Dominican Republic carries due to the worsening of the multidimensional crisis in Haiti. He spoke of the ongoing Dominican contributions to Haitian welfare, citing the delivery of fuel to hospitals in Haiti, providing of safe transit to diplomats and other personnel, and the fact that close to a third of all births in Dominican public hospitals are to Haitian women who cross the border just for that purpose.
