Presidency enacts Land Use Law

At last minute, the Chamber of Deputies changed the Land Use Bill to assign to city governments authority to decide land use. A Chamber of Deputies and Senate committee had harmonized the bill articles delegating to technicians at the Ministry of Economy decisions on land use and not to the politicians that normally control the city governments.

Notwithstanding, after the Chamber of Deputies made the changes, the Senate went ahead and voted yes to delay no longer the passing of the bill. The bill had been making the rounds in Congress for around two decades.

The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is majority in both congressional houses and controls most of the city governments.

On 22 December 2022, the Presidency announced it was enacting the bill as Land Use Law 368-22.
