
He played baseball for the University of Oklahoma, but Hazael Wessin never got past the minor leagues. However, his studies as a physical trainer paid off, and last fall, when there was just one out left for the Houston Astros to claim the World Series title, team manager Dusty Baker told him to sit tight until the last out was called.
Wessin shortly after was called by big league star Nelson Cruz, the manager of the Dominican team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, and asked to be the team’s trainer.
Wessin told his interviewers that everything started when one of the Alou brothers, Jesus, obtained an internship for him. As a result of that experience, he was hired by the Astros where about 70% of the team is Hispanic.
