US President Joe Biden awarded Dominican-born Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell the Presidential Citizens Medal during a ceremony at the White House on 6 January 2023. Gonnel was on duty that historic day.
Gonell was among the dozen people honored in the White House ceremony on the occasion of the second anniversary of the insurrection that failed to stop the congressional certification of Biden’s 2020 victory over former US President Donald Trump in the Electoral College.
Aquilino Gonell was one of three law enforcement officers that Maine resident Kyle Fitzsimons was convicted of assaulting in the Capitol riot.
Gonell is a naturalized American who had served in the US Army before joining the Capitol Police.
“For patriotism that puts love of country before self, We the People honor US Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino A. Gonell,” Biden said in his remarks at the nationally televised ceremony.
